A Crossing, Not a Trek
Kalindi Khal links the Gangotri and Badrinath valleys over a 19,500 ft glaciated pass — this is mountaineering terrain with crevasse fields, rope work and camps on ice. It should only be attempted as a properly equipped expedition with certified guides, and many teams treat it as preparation for climbing peaks.
The Route
Gangotri → Bhojwasa → Tapovan/Nandanvan → Vasuki Tal → Khada Patthar → Kalindi base and the pass, descending via Arwa valley to Ghastoli and Badrinath. Load ferries and acclimatization days stretch the schedule to two weeks.
Requirements
IMF/forest permissions, glacier equipment (rope, harness, crampons, ice-axe), high-altitude insurance and prior experience above 5,000 m are all effectively mandatory. Choose operators with a documented Kalindi record.
Season
Short windows in June and September between snow load and monsoon. Weather holds the veto at all times on this route.
