The Winter Alternative
Brahmatal rose to fame as the winter trek with everything: snow-laden forests, two lakes (Bekaltal and Brahmatal, often frozen), a ridgeline walk, and front-row views of Trishul and Nanda Ghunti. It runs when most high routes shut.
The Route
From Lohajung (7,600 ft), the trail climbs to Bekaltal through oak and rhododendron, crosses to Brahmatal lake, and gains the Brahmatal top/ridge around 12,250 ft before descending via Daldum back to Lohajung.
Best Time
Mid-December to mid-March for full snow. Late March–April offers rhododendron bloom with patchy snow. Summer is quiet here — most trekkers shift to higher objectives.
Difficulty
Easy-to-moderate: short days, one sustained ridge climb, and cold-weather camping. A good first snow trek for anyone with basic fitness; operators typically provide microspikes and gaiters.
