In the deep green Mandal valley below Chopta lives one of Garhwal's gentlest legends. Sati Anusuya, wife of the sage Atri, was so perfect in devotion that the Trimurti — Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva — came to test her, and were turned by her power into infants; they later blessed her with the child-sage Dattatreya, their combined form. Her temple stands at about 2,000 m above Mandal village in Chamoli, reached by a lovely walk through oak, rhododendron and stepped fields.
The Trek
From Mandal (13 km from Gopeshwar by road), a well-made trail climbs about 5 km to the temple hamlet — 2 to 3 easy hours, fine for families. A further 2 km leads to the Atri Muni cave and waterfall, where the sage is said to have meditated; the amphitheatre of cliffs there is worth every extra step.
The Dattatreya Fair
The temple's great night is the Dattatreya Jayanti mela in December, when childless couples keep vigil through the night seeking the goddess's blessing — one of Garhwal's most moving village fairs.
Best Time to Visit
March–June and September–November for clear trails and views; December for the mela if you're prepared for cold. Monsoon turns the forest lush but leech-happy.
Pair It With
The Rudranath trek begins at Sagar village minutes from Mandal, and Tungnath is under an hour up the Chopta road — three very different shrines from one base. See all our temple journeys.
Walking the Mandal Valley?
Anusuya Devi pairs beautifully with Rudranath’s Sagar trailhead nearby. We run both from Gopeshwar with local guides.
