Purnagiri Devi: Kumaon\u2019s Great Shakti Peeth Above the Kali

A ridge-top Shakti Peeth at about 1,676 m where the Kali river leaves the mountains — host to one of North India\u2019s biggest spring fairs.

Temple Guide · Updated July 2026

Purnagiri (also called Punyagiri) crowns a ridge of the Annapurna peak above Tanakpur in Champawat district, right where the Kali river — our own Sharda — breaks out of the Himalaya into the plains. It is one of the most revered Shakti Peeths of the region: the navel of Sati is believed to have fallen here when Vishnu's chakra cut her body from Shiva's grieving arms. At roughly 1,676 m, the shrine looks down on one side to the braided silver of the Sharda and across the border into Nepal on the other.

The Climb

Vehicles reach Thuligad and on to the Tunyas/Bhairav temple parking beyond it; from there a paved pilgrim path climbs about 3 km — steep in stretches, lined with prasad stalls and resting points — to the ridge-top sanctum. Allow 1.5–2.5 hours up at pilgrim pace. Palanquins and porters are available in season. Darshan at the top is of the Devi's pindi form; just below is the jhoothe ka mandir, tied with the legend of a false vow — locals will tell you the story better than any guidebook.

The Chaitra Navratri Mela

Purnagiri's fame peaks in March–April, when the Chaitra Navratri mela becomes one of the largest religious fairs in Kumaon — lakhs of pilgrims walk the route over the festival weeks, many barefoot from Tanakpur itself. It is electric, devotional and crowded; if you want the fair, book Tanakpur rooms far ahead. If you want quiet darshan, come on weekdays outside the mela window.

How to Reach

Tanakpur is the gateway — its railhead connects to Bareilly and Delhi (Purnagiri Jan Shatabdi), and NH-9 brings you by road from Delhi (~320 km) or Pithoragarh (~150 km via Champawat, one of Kumaon's prettiest drives). From Tanakpur town it's about 20 km to the Thuligad roadhead. Taxis and shared jeeps run all day in season.

Timings and Best Time

The temple is open year-round, with darshan through daylight hours. October–April offers cool climbing weather and the clearest river views; the mela brings the festival experience; monsoon months are green but the climb turns sweaty and the road slow. Start the walk early — the ridge catches serious sun by noon.

Around Purnagiri

Across the Sharda in Nepal sits Brahmadev temple, visited by many pilgrims as the yatra's traditional completion (carry ID for the border crossing). Boom-Ghat riverside, the Sharda barrage, and the Champawat heritage temples (Baleshwar's carved stone is superb) fill out a weekend. From there, the road home to Pithoragarh climbs straight into our temple-trek country — Patal Bhuvaneshwar and Haat Kalika are en route.
