Neelkanth Mahadev: Where Shiva Drank the Poison

The shrine above Rishikesh marking where Shiva held the ocean’s poison in his throat — reached by road or a classic 12 km jungle trail.

Temple Guide · Updated July 2026

When the churning of the ocean produced the poison halahala, Shiva drank it and held it in his throat, which burned blue — and tradition places that act here, on a forested spur at about 1,330 m above the Ganga's east bank near Rishikesh. Neelkanth Mahadev ("the blue-throated") is among the busiest Shiva shrines in north India, its ornate gopuram-style entrance rising improbably from Rajaji's jungle.

Getting There

A 32 km motor road winds up from Ram Jhula's east bank — about an hour by taxi or shared jeep. The soulful alternative is the old pilgrim trail: ~12 km through Rajaji Tiger Reserve forest from Swarg Ashram, 3–4 hours of langurs, streams and birdcall. Walk up, ride down: the classic plan, and the one we guide.

At the Temple

The sanctum lingam sits beneath a canopy carved with the ocean-churning story; a spring in the courtyard fills bathing tanks. Offerings are simple — bel leaves, water from the Ganga carried up in kanwars during Shravan (July–August), when lakhs of kanwariyas make the temple one vast procession. If crowds aren't your darshan, avoid Shravan and Maha Shivratri; a weekday winter morning is bliss.

Best Time to Visit

October–March for cool, clear trekking weather; the jungle trail is closed or risky in monsoon and hot after 10 am in summer. Start the walk at dawn — for the forest, and for the animals' sake.

Pair It With

Combine Neelkanth with a Kunjapuri sunrise for Rishikesh's perfect sacred day, then point the vehicle upriver: Dhari Devi, the Char Dham and all our temple journeys begin on this very road.

Visiting Neelkanth from Rishikesh?

We run the jungle-trail trek with return by road — the best way to earn this darshan. Easy add-on to any Rishikesh stay.
