Manimahesh: The Kailash of Himachal

A 13 km trek from Hadsar to the glacial lake at 4,080 m beneath Manimahesh Kailash — Himachal’s greatest yatra.

Trekking Guide · Updated July 2026

Five Kailashes ring the Indian Himalaya, and Himachal's is Manimahesh — the 5,653 m peak above Bharmour in Chamba, on whose summit Shiva is believed to dwell and at whose feet lies the sacred Manimahesh Dal lake (about 4,080 m). Legend says the peak flashes a jewel (mani) at dawn from Shiva's crown; no climber has ever been permitted — or, locals note with satisfaction, successful — in reaching its top.

The Trek

From Hadsar (13 km beyond Bharmour) the pilgrim trail climbs ~13 km to the lake, gaining 1,800 m via the waterfall camp of Dhancho — most yatris take two days up with a night there, one long day down. Ponies, porters and (in season) helicopter shuttles to Gauri Kund operate. The final ridge, past Gauri Kund where women traditionally bathe, delivers the lake and the mountain in one breath-stealing reveal.

The Yatra Window

The formal Manimahesh Yatra runs between Janmashtami and Radha Ashtami (August–September), when lakhs walk behind the sacred chhari (staff) processions and the lake's icy parikrama and bath carry full merit. Outside the window, June and late September offer the trek in near-solitude — with no facilities standing, so full self-sufficiency.

Preparation

The altitude jump is serious: sleep at Bharmour (2,100 m) and Dhancho, hydrate, and turn back on worsening symptoms. Nights at the lake freeze even in August. Chamba's roads are long — Pathankot is the practical railhead, ~180 km from Bharmour.

Pair It With

Bharmour's own 84-temple chaurasi complex rewards a rest day; the ancient Lakshna Devi at Chamba fills the drive out. For the other Kailashes — Adi Kailash in our home district above all — see our Himalayan temple journeys.
