The scriptures call Uttarkashi Saumya Kashi — the gentle Kashi — and give it the same sacred geography as Varanasi: a Vishwanath temple, a Ganga (here the Bhagirathi), even a Manikarnika ghat. The Kashi Vishwanath temple, rebuilt in 1857 by Maharani Khaneti of Tehri on far older foundations, anchors the town's old bazaar and every yatra that passes toward Gangotri.
The Shakti Trident
Facing the main shrine stands the temple's wonder: the Shakti temple with its ~6 m bronze-and-iron trident, believed centuries old and, by legend, hurled by the goddess to slay demons here. Pilgrims test it — the massive shaft is said to tremble at a finger's touch of the devout and resist the push of the proud.
Visiting
The temple sits in the heart of Uttarkashi town, 155 km from Rishikesh on the Gangotri highway — the standard first-night halt of the western Char Dham. Morning and evening aartis bracket the day; Maha Shivratri and the Magh Mela (January), when village devtas process into town in palanquins, are the great occasions.
Best Time to Visit
Year-round. Yatra season (May–June, Sept–Oct) fills the town with pilgrim energy; winter gives you the temple, and the town's famous sweet shops, nearly to yourself.
Pair It With
Vishwanath is the natural evening before Gangotri, and pairs with Yamunotri on the Do Dham loop. The NIM mountaineering institute and Harsil valley fill any spare day — details in our temple journeys.
Overnighting in Uttarkashi?
Every Gangotri yatra pauses here. We time the evening aarti at Vishwanath into all our Char Dham itineraries.
