Few shrines anywhere sit in a setting like Hemkund Sahib: a star-shaped gurdwara on the rim of a glacial lake at about 4,160 m, ringed by seven snow ridges whose reflections tremble in water cold enough to stop your breath. Sikh tradition identifies this as the lake where Guru Gobind Singh, in a previous life, meditated in austerity; beside the gurdwara stands the small Lokpal Lakshman temple, tying the lake into the Ramayana as well. Pilgrims of both faiths climb together — and bathe together, briefly.

The Route
The yatra starts at Govindghat on the Badrinath highway. Day one is the 13 km river-valley walk (sharable jeeps cover the first 4 km) to Ghangaria, the tented-and-hoteled base village at 3,050 m. Day two is the business end: 6 km of relentless switchbacks gaining 1,100 m to the lake — 4 to 6 hours up at pilgrim pace. Ponies, porters and dandis operate the whole way, and gurdwara langar and chai stalls keep everyone fed. Descend the same day; overnighting at the lake is not permitted.
The Valley of Flowers Combo
From Ghangaria, a second trail enters the Valley of Flowers National Park — the UNESCO-listed meadow valley that peaks in bloom during late July and August. Most trekkers give the valley a full day between arrival and the Hemkund climb, making a perfect 4-day itinerary from Govindghat. Park entry is ticketed and day-use only.
Season and Best Time
Hemkund opens around late May / early June and closes in early October (exact dates set each year — verify before travel). June brings snowbanks at the lake; July–August pairs the flowers with warm-ish days and monsoon mists; September gives the clearest skies and cold mornings. Whatever the month, weather above 4,000 m changes in minutes — start early and carry a shell.
Altitude and Practical Notes
The jump from Ghangaria to 4,160 m is real: hydrate, climb slow, and turn around if headache or nausea build. Warm layers are essential even in August — the lake sits in shadow half the day. Registration for the corridor is checked at Govindghat; carry ID. Hot tea and khichdi at the top-station langar taste better than anything you will ever cook.
Pair It With
Badrinath is under an hour up the highway from Govindghat — most pilgrims do both. Add Kalpeshwar on the drive out and you've touched three great shrines in one Garhwal swing; our temple journeys run exactly that route.
