Garjiya Devi: The Goddess on the River Rock

The shrine of Girija (Parvati) atop a lone rock in the Kosi river at Corbett’s doorstep — Kumaon’s most dramatic temple setting.

Temple Guide · Updated July 2026

A single huge rock stands mid-current in the Kosi river near Ramnagar, and on its crown, up a steep flight of steps, lives Garjiya Devi — Girija, daughter of the mountain, Parvati herself. Legend says the rock came floating down in a flood and was commanded to halt by Bhairav from the bank; the goddess has held her river throne ever since, at the very gates of Corbett Tiger Reserve.

Visiting the Shrine

You cross the riverbed (bridged in the main season) and climb ~90 steps to the small sanctum, where the goddess stands with Ganesha and Bhairav; his temple on the bank receives the first offering by custom. The Kosi's braided channels, forest on both sides and langurs on the wires make this the most photogenic darshan in lower Kumaon.

The Kartik Purnima Fair

Garjiya's great day is Kartik Purnima (November), when a vast mela fills the riverbed and pilgrims bathe in the cold Kosi at dawn. Navratris and the month of Shravan run it close. After monsoon floods the steps occasionally close for repairs — check locally in September.

How to Reach

The temple is ~14 km from Ramnagar on the Ranikhet road — 20 minutes from the Corbett gates, 3.5 hours from Kathgodam side. Every safari town hotel arranges the trip; go at opening time to beat the queue.

Pair It With

Morning Garjiya + afternoon Corbett safari is the classic. Heading uphill, Naina Devi and Ghorakhal lie two hours on — the lake-country leg of our Kumaon temple journeys.

Adding Corbett to Your Circuit?

Garjiya pairs a morning darshan with an afternoon safari — we run the combination from Ramnagar year-round.
